A global view

1. Volcanic activity in this area displaced a nearby stream which began to cut into the ground.
What do they mean by "cut into the ground"
2. Some volcanoes occur as one plate pushes beneath another plate.
Do they mean by "push" to " press"
3. It slowly sinks again as it cools.
Does it mean "it sinks and cools at the same time?
4. Where plates move over or against each other.
As far as I understand this sentence is that "move over" means to leave some space to another person.
But in this sentence I can't understand the meaning of move over or against each other?!
