A generation

On January 10, 1777 Carl Linnaeus died in the morning.

His name, although still familiar three hundred years later, was only a generation old, and it commemorated the linden tree. Until Linnaeus’s father, Nils Ingemarsson, wanted to enter the church, his patronymic name was good enough for a farmer living in southernSweden, but to enroll at a university a surname was required. Near the family estate of Linnegard grew a huge linden tree, called in Swedish lind, so Nils called himself Linnaeus, or “Linden-tree man,” after the tree.

It’s very confusing to know that Linnaeus died 300 years ago but his name was only a generation old. The name Linnneus was named by his father, and then how it could be only a generation (60 or 70 years) old?

Thanks in advance!

A generation is generally considered to be about 20 or 30 years: it is measured from the birth of the next generation. It is now about 230 (not 300) years since Linnaeus's death, but that has nothing to do with when his surname was coined.

Hi,

First, note this.

A generation is not a clearly defined term. Some people think of it as the time from when a person is born until when they die, eg maybe 70 years. Others think of it as the time from when a person is born until that person creates (ie generates) a child, thu
