a gem-quality ruby

Because of the rarity of a gem-quality ruby, some large rubies have sold for more than flawless diamonds.

Hi,

How should I interpret "gem-quality" in the above? Thanks.

Hi Angliholic I'd interpret gem-quality to mean 'very good' or 'high quality'.

Technically it means that the gem is a pure strong colour and has no occlusions or faults - extremely rare in rubies and emeralds.

Thanks, Amy and Feebs.

Got it.

By the way, Amy, do you know what 'structural member" refers to? I know eachword but I've never seen them conbined together.
