Does this make sense?

"Furthermore, some systems did a further step, as they are able to operate directly over compressed data"

I mean the did something more advanced.

However I want to say that some systems, did something extra! All systems were improved, but some of them, did an extra step! How can change your answer to emphasise this?

Also why I cant say "over the data"?
