A fringe phenomenon

Hi teachers,

Coal kills miners...Natural piplelines sometimes explode... Nuclear reactors will never be risk-free; no technology is......The public has become more familiar with the concept of risk, and the fact that it is ubiquitous. The bumper sticker S--T HAPPENS used to be a fringe phenomenon, but now it's mainstream: people have become resigned to risk."

1. I couldn't find an appropriate meaning in the dictionary to help me understand.

2. Could you tell me if "S--T" a curse word so it didn't print out?

Thank you

1. A fringe phenomenon is one that borders on something (be it science, religion, politics etc) and that people often find strange, extreme and difficult to understand or accept. Paranormal phenomena (levitation, psychokinesis etc) usually belong to this group as do various groups of people (religious sects , extreme political factions) whose beliefs are different from the established beliefs of the majority of people residing in the region.
