1-We met a friend of my wife's and of mine.

Could this sentence be used instead of:
2-We met a friend of my wife's and a friend of mine.

We met two people. One of them was my wife's friend and the other one was my friend.

So it could be used if we actually met two people?
It could obviously be used if we only met one person. That is a given as far as I am concerned.
