A friend of mother or mother's

hi,

In a English grammar book, it reads "He is a friend of my mother" but I think it should be "a friend of my mother's" since I often hear "a friend of 'mine'".

Would you explain why "mother" is correct instead of "mother's"?

Thank you,

Both are fine, but the 'double possessive' is probably more common. The only problem is when it can be ambiguous: A photo of my mother vs a photo of my mother's
