a friend of mine / my friend

Hi, I'm trying to figure out the difference between 'a friend of mine' and 'my friend'.

-He is a friend of mine.
-He is my friend.

Is there any difference between them?

Not in normal use, but the first one says that you have more than one friend; the second one does not.
