There is very little difference in actual meaning. "a friend of mine" may be very slightly more idiomatic in more situations.

There would be more difference in the negative. "He's no friend of mine" is understatement and means very much the opposite. "He's not a friend of mine" is similar but weaker. "He is not one of my friends" could be a simple statement of fact.

A friend of mine - to me this allows for your having only one friend in the world.
'one of my friends' - this does not.
