Letter Writing

A formal appreciation letter requires some improvement!

Hello everyone,

I am writing an email to a professor. He is a very important and extremely busy person. I met him before 5 or 6 months. Now I want to send him a thank you you letter and continue contacting with him. So I tried my best with this letter, but I think it's still not perfect enough. I want it to be so formal and show real appreciation in a reasonable and respectful way that gives him a first good impression on me and impel him to answer my email. (I think what I need here is to use the right expressions, and may be some improvements in the stucture and grammer) ......

I would be truly grateful if anyone could correct my letteror help me to improve it or at least give me some piece of advice to improve it. I would appreciate the time you would spend in helping me improve it. :-)

Dear Proffesor xxxxx,

I am xxxxxxx one of the students who participated in xxxx program last year. We had met each other in the discussion groups in xxx institution and in the conference on "xxx".

I would very much like to thank you for the time you spent with us at the exchange. It was extremely valuable for me to share the experiences and opinions you had about xxx and was very impressed by them, and the efforts and the contributions you did in the xxxx.

Professor xxx, I would like to let you know that the experience had a great effect on my life; it further stimulated my ambitions and my awareness of various perspectives. One of the lessons that I learned from the discussion is when you said "we did a mistake in xxx." It is a very small lesson with a great value. It's really wonderful how you acknowledge of your own mistakes. I believe this is one of the aspects we need in our attitudes here in xxx.

Professor xxx, after I met you at xxx, ever since, I am following your articles and researches. I believe it's very useful for the people, here in xxx, to read your articles as they show a very clear definition to democracy and the real situation in xxx. A particular group of people are having the access to your articles on internet and it's well known that our access to books is still so poor. As such, I believe that there is a vast majority of people here in xxx that still has no access to such articles and researches as I perceive it very important and useful for the people here to read about it. I believe your articles would do a great deal in showing Iraqi people new perspectives, the American perspective, on the situation and the democracy path in xxx.

I would truly appreciate if you give me the permission to translate and publish your articles here in xxx news papers.

I would truly treasure the time you would spend from your busy schedule on reading this mail. And I would very much appreciate if we could continue sharing our opinions and views.

Sincerely Your,

xxxxxx xxxxxxxxx

For this kind of thing, it is preferable to send by regular mail (or airmail, if the letter is going to a foreign country). Many people, including me, will not open email from senders who they don't know, or who they might think they don't know.
