A fork in the road

Hi. I heard " a fork in the road" in a song, and then looked up its meaning. According to urbandictionary.com, it has this meaning: "A way to show that there is a large decision to be made and you have to chose between to obstacles. "

However, Neihter Merriam-Webster nor Oxford nor Cambridge suggests such a meaning. What do you think?

Like many (even most) definitions in Urban Dictionary, this one is poorly written. Urban Dictionary has no proper editorial control, and many entries are written by unskilled contributors. Nevertheless, "fork in the road" does have a fairly obvious figurative meaning, namely a point at which a choice must be made between two paths or courses of action.

  • Of course, it also has a literal meaning.
  • It is not possible to be certain whether the lyric is literal or figurative without more context.

Thanks very much GPY and AlpheccaStars. It's from a rap song my friend showed me today. Here's the context:

I'm living on my last breath
Hit a fork in the road and the devil occupies both lanes.

I think it means no matter which road the guy chooses/takes, he'll still encounter/see the devil.
