A follow up question to my post re: appetite

A dialog in the ESL book I'm using reads:

A: Why do you like to exercise right before a meal?
B: Because that helps make appetite grow stronger.

My concerns:

1. Isn't the combination of helps and make in this sentence a little tautological? Can we just use makes instead?
2. Is the predicate "grow strong(er)" appropriate for the subject "appetite"? Are there other better sounding alternatives?

P.S.
I just noticed that I have reached the status of a full member in this forum.[<:o)] YOU GUYS ARE GREAT.[Y] English Grammar has turned out to be more complicated than Newtonian Physics and you guys just make it clear and simple here. Your generous inputs make us (non-native speakers and even some native speakers) understand English grammar in context and technicality--things that Mr Webster can never teach us. The moment CalifJim explained to me what part of speech the word "rather" assumes in the sentence I would rather that he did it, I knew this was the perfect place to ask questions regarding English grammar and vocabulary. I hope you don't tire of enlightening the world with your unquestionable genius. Through this forum, I have become allergic to "i" representing "I", I have learned to disdain the use of "u" and "tnx" and "thx". I have learned to love proper English. Thanks to those who have always given attention to my sometimes annoying questions--CalifJim, MisterMicawber, Mr Wordy, Cool Breeze, Grammar Geek, Avangi and those who have kept this forum alive with their invaluable contributions.

Why did I forget to mention Clive? Thanks Clive!
I will never forget the "tango" profile picture.
CliveHelps' suggests there are also other factors that make appetite stronger.
This makes things clearer.

Thanks again.
