A flash of color

As you are enjoying the paintings oon a museum's walls, a flash of color above you suddenly catches your eye. A closer look reveals a series of shapes hanging from the ceiling. As the forms turn gently in the breeze, different patterns appear. You first see a flock of birds and then an entire solar system of planets and moons. This is kinetic art, which uses movement to create changing works of art.

Hi,

The above is from an article named "The Art of Movement." What does "a flash of color" refer to? Does it mean "a moment of color flashing?"

Besides, is the bolded "movement" equal to "motion?" Thanks.

I think "a flash of color" is figurative/metaphorical/descriptive/fancy language. A painting's colors don't really flash, but they get your attention as if they were flashing. It's saying the color is so noticeable that it's like a flash.

  • Yes, I think you're right.
  • I think there's some art meaning for "movement", but I think that in this case, because the "forms turn gently in the breeze", movement is equivalent to motion.

Looking back (I need to start thinking before I press "Save"), I think that because the forms are moving, the colors might really be able to flash unless they're drab. Maybe some light reflected. But alone, the phrase "a flash of color" when refering to static colors means they're really noticeable in my opinion.
