A flash in the pan

Many wonder if flash mobs are just a flash in the pan. They'll be with us as long as people feel a longing to join in on this kind of practical joke.

Hi,
Does "a flash in the pan" in the above mean "lasting only a very short moment?" If yes, why does it mean so? Does "a flash" refer to "a flash of light? If yes, why is there a flash of light in the pan? Thanks.
