A fiend angelical

Hi,

Some adjectives follow the pattern 'fiend angelical'. Are there rules that govern this use, or specific adjectives that can be expressed thus?

Thanks.

I would say that really it is just a quasi-poetical, dramatic and emphatic style of writing. It is uncommon , and I would advise students of English to avoid it until they feel their English is very good. To my ear, it sounds better when the adjective ends in --al, eg an event historical eg a style pictorial eg a mood hysterical Clive
