(A) few -> the few

I know the difference between a few and few but I was wondering if the few also has the same difference like that?

And how can we know the few comes from a few or few? Should we distinguish in context?

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance!

A few people ~ a small number of people.
The few people ~ the small number of people.

Few people ~ not many people.

I suppose the way you're thinking of it, you'd say the few 'comes from' a few.
