A few sentences I'm not sure about

Hi,

I'm pretty much unsure whether these three constructions are correct English:

* He said that blacks were often discriminated against. (Or better "are discriminated against?")
* I think that the media are somewhat responsible for (...). (I'm unsure about the article before "media")
* John is fond of confirmation of his views. ("confirmation" or "the confirmation?")

Thank you a lot in advance!

All these look fine. Whether you use "were discriminated against" or "are discriminated against" will depend on the context and whether the statement relates to the past or the present. "the media" = newspapers/television/radio - correct to have "the".

IMO:
John is fond of getting/obtaining confirmation(s) for his views.
