A few miles less

Which are correct:
1) Now I had to travel a few miles less.
2) Now I had to travel a few less miles.
3) Now I had to travel a few fewer miles.
4) Now I had to travel a few miles fewer.

The first sounds natural. The third and fourth sound unnatural. I don't particularly like the second, but I think you'll hear it.
