A few grammer questions

Hey everyone! I have a few quick questions, thank you so much for your time.

1. "Mike did not speak a lot during class."

Is DURING class ok? should it be in class instead?

2. Is it cool to start a sentence with- "Recess started, and the kids started playing basketball."

Is there any better way to start this sentence? recess has started?...

3. If two people are walking together, and then they each go their separate ways and keep walking home, is this a good way to describe that-

"They parted and went home."

4.One last question-

Does this work as an introductory:

"It was afternoon time, and Mike was resting."

Thank you so much for your time again!
