a few different questions for a teacher

It seems the 2 sentences are different but are they? Is one correct and the other not?

What was the gate number he was in front of?
What was the number of the gate he was in front of?

Is it correct to write "was overtaken" and "fell in 4th position"?- The car in 3 place was overtaken and fell in 4th position.

Is there a syntax mistake or other?- The race was filmed in a way to make the spectators think it was close when it wasn't.

Thank you in advance
