A feeling but the state, help with articles please

Hi, I was looking up some words in a dictionary and the definations of some words had different articles like this:

happiness: the state of being happy

disappointment: a feeling of unhappiness

despair: a feeling that you have no hope at all

oh, also I'm wondering why the preposition "OF" was used in the first two.

Thanks so much! I would appreciate any help.

Hi Anon - It is not an easy question, but lexicographers (the professionals who write dictionaries) have to eplain words as clearly and precisely as possible. For nouns, the definition naturally begins with the definite or indefinite article followed by a noun or noun phrase that is synonymous with the entry. The definition must be gramatically correct, too.
