a farmer's question

Hi,

Not sure if I use/interprete these (closely related) words, CATTLE and LIVESTOCK, correctly.
If you could help?

Ex: "Local farmers usually keep only sheep and poultry".

(1) Can we say that the general category LIVESTOCK includes the subcategories CATTLE, SHEEP, PIGS and POULTRY?
(2) Some sources claim SHEEP are part of CATTLE, some seem to treat them as different/"self-sufficient" categories in their own right.
(3) to keep pigs - BE, to keep hogs - AE - is it a real or just imaginary (no matter what my Longman actually claims :-)) BrE vs AmE distinction?

Which is the prevailing view?

I've never hear 'cattle' used to refer to sheep/goats/antelopes.

The term 'bovine' is quite commonly used to refer to all animals that have cleft hooves.
