a e i o u - what do you call these?

As in, ice-cream, aeroplane and umbrella for example, what do we call this erm...set of rules? Thanks.

Since you mention 'rules' perhaps you are looking for one that governs the use of 'a' vs 'an', the latter being used before a word beginning with a vowel: an umbrella vs a tree. Does this help?
