A doubt. Reported Speech.

Hi teachers,

Baxter said, "That's Coke! He isn't going to get away this time."
Reported Speech:
Baxter said (that) that's Coke. He wasn't going to get away that time.

For me something is missing in between ... Coke and He wasn't ..
It doesn't sound correct to me, but I don't know what it is.

Thanks in advance.

  • Perhaps you can report this way: Baxter exclaimed(suits the place better than said) that that was Coke and he wasn't going to get away that time.

Why do you use 'it' if in the sentence is 'that'?

Could you explain me why?
Do you change the 'that' in direct speech to the 'it' in reported speech?
thanks

thank you so much for your help vsuresh. You are certainly right in using 'exclaimed'.

another one: you use 'and' because the conjunction conects both sentences, right?

Just to avoid repetition of "that".
