A door, which is...

Are these both correct:
1) He never went on top of the plane. He came in through a door, which is on the side of the plane.
2) He never went on top of the plane. He came in through a door, which is obviously on the side of the plane.

3) He never went on the roof of the house. He came in through one of the windows, which is on one of the four sides of the house.
4) He never went on the roof of the house. He came in through one of the windows, which obviously is on one of the four sides of the house.

I think in '3' and '4', if one says 'on one of the sides of the house', the listener would imagine that he did not come in through the windows in the front or in the back.

The idea is to say that he did not need to go on the roof. He just came in through a window, and that is not on the roof.

Gratefully,
Navi.

About 10 days ago, I learned on this forum that there are regional differences in use of exposure by windows and cross-ventilation. Some people live in houses with windows on all four sides, some live (in England especially) in houses with only front and rear doors & windows, and some live in apartments with just windows on a balcony. Despite all that background, I think that in a generic sentence (without an actual house involved, or plane for that matter) all 4 answers would be acceptable.

  • If this were a detective reporting in court about a burglary, it might be more important to know how many sides did have windows.
