A doctor's / the doctor's opinion

Hello!

Could you help me? When we use the Genetive Case ('s) in such sentences like "Did you ask a/the doctor's opinion?" the article refers to the word "doctor" or "opinion"? Or, for example, if we say "cow's milk" should we use an article and if yes, what word does the article refer: to "cow" or to "milk"? Thank you very much in advance!

Articles are always a problem, and there is never one answer! In your first example, the article refers to the word "doctor" and you would choose "a" or "the" depending on whether or not you are referring to a specific doctor ("a" for any doctor, "the" for a specific doctor). In your second example, most of the time you would use no article, as you are really talking about milk in general, and the word "cow's" just defines what type of milk.

  • It is possible to say "the cow's milk" if you want to explain that this milk comes from a particular cow.
