A difficult sentence

The part of Hong Kong where I used to live was famous for being a Triad den. There were plenty of secret mahjong gambling rooms, and the police were always raiding them.
Once, I was almost brained by a folding chair that came a bit close for comfort on its way to the curb.

In the above sentences, I don't get the last part. Could you rewrite it in simpler terms?

seagull Once, I was almost brained by a folding chair that came a bit close for comfort on its way to the curb. Once someone threw a folding chair out of a gambling room into the street, toward the curb. I was almost struck in the head by the chair as it passed very close to my head, which was a very uncomfortable feeling.
