a difficult question

Choose the correct answer:
1-Carefully ….he drove , he couldn't avoid the accident.
a) as b) though c) although d) so
My answer is : as . My friend says we can use "though" or "as" after an adverb to show contrast. He says that both "a" and "b" are correct. Is that right?

So this means that there is no difference between "as" and "though". Am I right?
