A difficult phrase

Imagine a long, big ice cave. Two people are flying through it in a spaceship. One of them is looking around and says:

THREE METERS CLEARANCE PORT-SIDE.
ONE AND A HALF METERS STARBOARD.
WE GOT A CHOKE POINT COMING UP.

???????

Hope you'll help me.
Thanks in advance.
(That's from "The Chronicles of Riddick" movie.)

Top answer

On the left of the spaceship, the distance from the spaceship to the wall of the ice cave is three meters. On the right of the spaceship, the distance from the spaceship to the wall of the ice cave is one and a half meters. These distances are becoming less and less.

  • On the left of the spaceship, the distance from the spaceship to the wall of the ice cave is three meters.
  • On the right of the spaceship, the distance from the spaceship to the wall of the ice cave is one and a half meters.
  • These distances are becoming less and less.
  • The space we have to fly the spaceship through is getting smaller and smaller.
  • There is a point ahead of us which will be very narrow.
