I've never heard this particular rule, but you might suppose that a singular noun with a number could indicate a proper noun. In my city, fire stations and police stations are numbered - so Fire Station 3 is a place name, and thus capitalized as a proper noun. In airports, "Terminal" is often capitalized as a place name and followed by a reference letter or number.
