a definite article

I think both of the following sentences are correct. But why 2 is with 'a' while 1 is with 'the' ? If both sentences are correct, what's the difference between 1 & 2 ?

1. For the first step, you need to register your email address.
2. As a first step, you need to register your email address.

If both sentences are correct, what's the difference between 1 & 2? -- No difference in meaning. With 'the', the writer is already envisioning the step to come in his sentence; with 'a', he is not, that is all.
