I apologize for that confusing answer, but it's really a confusing subject. Really, both are correct, depending on your intention.

You could hand someone some cash, and say, "Here! This is a day's wages."

"You don't know what a day's wages mean(s) to me." (either way)

In the original poster's example (and let me interrupt myself to join Avangi in welcoming you to the forums), I would also use the singular.

Not because it's an expression, but because you're talking about a quantity of money. Just as you'd say "Fifty dollars IS too much to pay" or "Ten dollars was all I had left" using the singular, you'd use the singular for "a day's wages" because it'
