a dative verb, ask

Hello, everyone.

If I want to change the below sentence into having one object, what prepostion should I use?

Ted asked his father how to drive.

Ted asked how to drive to his father.
Ted asked how to drive of his father.

I have learned the verb ask gets along with 'of' when it has one object, but I think it seems a bit strange that I use ''of' for this sentence. Could I use 'to' instead of 'of'?

Many thanks in advance.
