What is a given field data?

Although the particular theories used in economic anthropology are quite diverse, they share the assumption that one or another universal model exists and can be used to explain a given field data.

A quick Google search reveals that Arturo Escobar is the only person in the world who uses the phrase "explain a given field data". It is not natural English.
