"A cup of coffee a day keeps doctors / the doctor away."

I would like to say, "A cup of coffee a day keeps doctors away." Is the sentence correct or it should be the doctor?

It so, could you tell me why there should 'the'?

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance.

  • It should be 'the doctor'.

  • Besides the fact that it comes from a set proverb, 'the' refers to each person's personal physician.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

I have learned that it is 'an apple', not 'a coffee'.
