A couple of small questions

Hi teachers,

"Working for your aunt?" said Joe. "I'm going down to the river. I'm sorry you can't come with me."
Tom put down his brush. "You call this work?" he said.

Is the question correct according to the text?
What did Tom do after what Joe said?

He put down his brush.

Another question:
Is it the same to say 'said Joe' and 'Joe said'?

Thanks in advance
