A Copy of Respective Documents are/is?

Hello all.

Today I saw a sentence that goes like this: A copy of respective documents are forwarded for your review.
There is no doubt about the meaning. It is clear that several copies are being forwarded since each document has its corresponding copy.
Still, I'm not totally convinced about using the plural form of verb "to be" in the above-mentioned sentence as its subject is expressed in its singular form, that is "a copy."

So I am wondering which one is correct.
Or should this kind of inevitably illogical syntax be avoided in the first place? If this is the case, I'd appreciate it very much if you could provide me with an alternative.

Thank you in advance.
