A conjunction question

When I accidentally broke Mr. Parker's antique Chinese vase, I felt as if I ---- a criminal.

A) am being
B) have been
C) am being
D) were
E) had been
Which one is correct? Why?

A & C are both the same - but the present continuous is not correct because you are referring to something in the past.

B&E are related, as you can see. In this case, you would use the PAST perfect, because you are referring to a past event that is now over.

However, D gets my vote. "if I were" is the subjunctive - I was not a criminal, so it's contrary to actual fact, but I fel

In everyday life, I'll bet people will use "D". If one insists, "E" is a reluctant choice, to me anyway. Again, answering questions of this kind may be compared to troubleshootting something electronics.
