A complex sentence

Hi,

"The importance of the theory from the point of view of social inequality lies, not so much in the claim that people use more or less explicit speech in different circumstances, but that different people may differ in the explicitness of their speech in the same circumstances."

I have some questions about the wording of the sentence above.

1. The bold part of the sentence is a parenthetical statement, so it can be removed and the sentence should remain grammatical, which is not the case here. "The importance of the theory from the point of view of social inequality lies but that different people may differ in the explicitness of their speech in the same circumstances."*

2. Is the following suggestion correct?

"The importance of the theory from the point of view of social inequality lies, not so much in the claim that people use more or less explicit speech in different circumstances, but in that different people may differ in the explicitness of their speech in the same circumstances."

Thank you.
