Is the expression "a clothes" correct in grammar?

(Ex. "He was putting a clothes on the hanger.")

It's somewhat confusing to me.

No, say 'some clothes'.

Not really.

He was putting "an article of clothing" or "a piece of clothing" would work. He was hanging up the clothes. (That implies more than one thing.)

I found this in my dictionary about the word, clothes.
