Hi,
I am a little confused...
One of my dictionaries claims this idiom only applies to males (= "son is very similar to his father in appearance or character"), the other one says it applies to females as well as males.
If you could elaborate on the actual use of the idiom?

That might be true. At least I've never heard it used with regard to women (though it appears that others may have). For that matter, I haven't heard it used for a great many years anyway. It's so dated that it's doubtful you'll hear it anymore these days.
