A child is born with or without talents

Question (Cam 7, test 1, task 2):

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to be a good sports person or musician.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Answer:

While some people are convinced that special skills naturally exist with just some children, others hold a belief that these skills can be nurtured to any child to become a good sports person or musician. Although I am more in favor of the latter opinion, both of them will be discussed.

There is reason why people support the opinion that dominant skills exist with just some babies when they are given birth, not all. This can be explained that this skills existence is linked to gene which such babies inherit from their parents. For example, a 3 year old child without any lesson can sing well and emotionally the songs he/ she has heard from his/ her mother. Additionally, he/ she can play by themselves some musical instrument in a manner which others need several years to acquire.

In contrast, people believe that special skills can be trained because of some following reasons. The brain of children is structured to obtain skills more perfectly than that of adults. Besides, with a strict and long term training program, they can become talents in their field. For instance, a child of 4 years old first is taught to swim correctly. Then he/ she is coached to increase their speed day to day. The training result of every day even bad or good is recorded carefully to follow up his/ her progress. Based on that, coach will analyze and improve their student’s potential ability.

In conclusion, talents are both nature and nurture. In case children are born without any special skills, they can be trained to become an outstanding person with a strict and long term training program.
