A castle!

Hi there,

Statement (someone tells me): "I was driving around and saw a castle".

(I reply):
1. "Where did you see a castle?"
2. "Where did you see the castle?"
3. "Where did you see that castle?"

Is #1 correct? I think #2 and #3 are definitely correct and mean the same thing (the castle just mentioned).

However, #1 (a castle) seems normal as well. I am just repeating what the other person said. It's still not specific enough. Also, I might be emphasizing the "where" and not "the castle".

Can someone confirm that my thoughts are correct?

Of the three choices offered, I think I would most likely use #1, then #2, and least likely would be #3. "

With a free choice, the first response that comes to my mind is "Where was that?"

Thanks, GPY!

Can I infer from your response that your likelihood of usage indicates your preference and not the correctness/incorrectness of each one? In other word

They are all grammatically correct English.

I would also point out that my preference is highly context-dependent, i.e. dependent on the reply following the statement "I was driving around and saw a castle". If, at some later time, you want to reopen a topic that was previously mentioned, then "Where did you see that castle?" (i.e. "that castle that you mentioned earlier") would be a natural thing to say.
