Back then, such a movie might be advertised with the phrase "A Cast of Thousands!!"

"Cast of thousands" actually means exactly that, a huge cast. Check out the work of legendary film director, Cecil B. De Mille. De Mille created the idea, someone else gave it the name. The scenes of the Jews fleeing Egypt in "The 10 Commandments" is a perfect example. It takes a LOT of work to wrangle so many people.
