A camping in the jungle

Can i say,

Last Monday was sunny. John and his friends decided to go camping in the big jungle nearby. They did some preparation before going to the camp.

It became dark / darker when they reached. John collected some firewood to make (up) a campfire while his friends pitched a big tent in the jungle.

After that, they split up into two groups. They did a cooking competition. At night, they also had a campfire party. They enjoyed themselves and had a wonderful time in the camp.
