A bookshelf or bookshelves?

Hi. I believe a bookcase is a structure that contains many shelves, which are for stalling books. Now, is the word "bookshelf" synonymous with the word "bookcase"? Or does it have to be "bookshelves" since a bookcase contains many shelves? I hope my question is clear. Any help from you will be appreciated.
