A boat?

When a big ship is about to harbour, a smaller boat comes and gives advices how they should approach the harbour. What do you call that 'boat'? I take it isn't merely a boat.

Thanks for that post, Anon! I live within spitting distance of a harbor, and I'd never heard of that term. I knew that 'tender' is the boat that takes passengers from ship to shore and that 'tug' is the boat that pulls the ship to the dock. I'm glad to learn a new term today.

One more thing. What's the appropriate expression for their encountering. Does the ship just meet with the pilot boat, or receive it?

I thought that the pilot actually got on to the larger vessel and took control of that ship? The pilot boat is just way to get the pilot to the big ship.
