I'm a little confused. what's exact meaning of severe here ?

the updating is a bit severe ,,,means a bit plain??right? that's to say,the updating is
very plain with little decoration.

but distressing is a bit severe , I'm not sure about this ,,means serious? , very bad? or as the same as above.

Thank you!

Yes, one possible meaning of "severe" is "very plain, with no decoration". That may be the meaning intended, but since you don't say what's being described, or anything about the circumstances, it's hard to be sure. "distressing is a bit severe" doesn't mean anything to me.

"distressing is a bit severe" doesn't mean anything to me. (Unless "distressing" refers to deliberate and artificial aging?) More context is needed.

yes ,

"distressing " here means

to mar (as clothing or wood) deliberately to give an effect of age,

it's clothing I'm talk about.

"distressing is a bit severe " makes sense to me ,its a comment about the distrssing technics.

I'm just not sure that "severe" here means "too much" ,or "too simple". thank you!
