A Bible question

Hi,

"The guests were completely cowed, like golden calf worshippers contemplating shards of Moses' broken tablets."

I am not very good at biblical allusions... Could somebody please comment on the highlighted? I guess I know who were those golden calf worshippers but ... the rest of the phrase is unclear to me........
