"a"

I am reading a book called "A History of the Modern World." I would like to know what is the meaning of "a". My guess is one of histories of the modern world. What would the title mean without "a" ?

Thank you

I haven't looked very deeply at this question, but my assumption has been that the article is used to show that there are other viewpoints. This history is from one author's viewpoint. It may be an attempt at humility by the author, a recognition that the author cannot give the full history of the modern world.
